Businesses are still hiring but with everyone being mandated to work from home, we are moving towards finding flexible alternatives to the typical face-to-face interview.
Video interviews will soon become the norm, including candidate application videos with personality profiles via AI technology. Where to start?
Your resume is an important tool for helping you to stand out from the crowd. It may take a while during these times, but it’s important to remain patient and positive during any conversation. This environment could even give you further time to map out your career or define your personal values and brand statement.
With social isolation, we are all spending a lot of time at home and access to our phones and laptops. It’s a great opportunity if you are seeking a new role, to improve your network online via LinkedIn. Update your profile and start creating more relevant connections in your network and industry of choice. This can become valuable in the future.
Top 5 tips for a stand-out video interview
1. Remove distractions
We all are know there are many distractions at home at the moment with a full family house. Organise a quiet time or space
where you can create some noise. Turn off anything that’s likely to ring or make a noise on your computer such as a notification during the interview. Close all email and other applications and turning your phone onto silent. Let everyone around you know to stop others from entering and making noise.
2. Great lighting, Great visuals
Bright light and good sound can really help the video interview experience. Sit against a plain background, dress professionally like as if it was a face to face interview and avoid overly
complicated colours and patterns as these can look busy on screen. Make sure your face is well-lit and framed within the centre of the camera. A window or lamp can improve lighting, and if you need to raise your computer to a good angle.
3. Test your technology
Whilst we know currently stable internet is variable at the moment, best to test that connection is reasonable and that the
webcam and audio are working well. If the employer or recruitment agency shares a video-conferencing link, make sure the video-conferencing software is
installed prior to the interview as this can sometime take a number of minutes to set-up. Skype, Zoom and Google Hangouts are current popular tools for digital meetings, but your interviewer will guide you on what to use. Do a ‘trial run’ to make sure you know it all works. We would suggest avoiding any other programs or updates to occur at the same time.
4. Be prepared just like any face to face interview
Preparation is critical for any interview so do the same over video. Research the organisation well and the person (or people) who will be interviewing you via LinkedIn. Have your resume, water, and a pen to take notes all close by. Best to have the mobile number of your interviewer in case something happens with your internet as this can be the case especially during Coronavirus work from home period in Australia. You will likely be asked behavioural competency based interview questions so be ready with responses. Remember Situation, Task, Action, Result!
5. Create a connection
You want to resonate over the camera to be memorable and approachable in your video interview. Don’t forget your posture. Sit-up straight and project a smile and talk with confidence. Most of your body will be hidden from camera so focus particular attention to facial gestures. Nod, smile and give plenty of cues to show that you are engaged and listening. Speak to the web cam to make it appear as if you are maintaining great eye-contact.
Tips for face-to-face interviews during Coronavirus (COVID-19)
If you do make it through to a face-to-face interview and it is appropriate to attend (or you are about to start a new
role), here are some recommended hygiene practices to prevent the spread of disease, including:
· Avoid shaking hands – this is new territory but in general an elbow bump, a wave or a small bow are accepted alternatives
· Wash your hands regularly with soap and water and especially
· Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue and dispose of tissues properly
· Keep a distance of 1.5 metres between you and other people whenever possible
· Isolate yourself and seek medical help if you are sick, have symptoms of COVID-19, or if your come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19.
